The national flag of the democratic republic of the Congo is rectangular, with a ratio of 3∶2. The flag is sky blue, with six yellow pentacle stars vertically distributed on the far left and a larger yellow pentacle in the middle. The six stars represent the six original provinces of the democratic republic of Congo when it became independent in 1960. The democratic republic of the Congo (DRC) was formerly the "private estate" of the king of Belgium, known as the "free state of the Congo". It gained independence in February 1960 and is called the republic of the Congo with its neighbours. On August 1, 1964, it was renamed the democratic republic of Congo. On October 27, 1971, it was renamed the republic of Zaire. On May 17, 1997, armed forces of the democratic forces for the liberation of the Congo (DRC) alliance led by lang kabila captured the capital kinshasa and declared himself President of the republic of the Congo. On February 18, 2006, the democratic republic of the Congo adopted a new constitution and changed its flag. The new flag is modeled after the country's 1966-71 flag, but the base color has been changed from dark blue to sky blue.
