The Ukrainian flag is rectangular with a ratio of length to width of 3:2. The flag surface is composed of two parallel rectangular sections, blue and yellow. Blue represents the sky and the sea, and symbolizes freedom and sovereignty. Yellow represents wheat fields, and symbolizes Ukraine's founding of a country by agriculture.
Blue and yellow are Ukrainian traditional colors, derived from the country's emblem, the yellow lion on the blue shield. In 1917, Ukraine was used as the flag of the independent People's Republic of Ukraine, which was abolished after the establishment of the Soviet Republic in 1920. The Soviet Union disintegrated and Ukraine reopened on 28 January 1992 after its re-independence.
